There are some genres that Hollywood loves to make and the viewers love to see. No other film industry can do anything better than Hollywood when it comes to making movies on hacking, computers and science-fiction. If codes, firewalls, mainframes and trojans are words that make you sit up straight, then these five movies need to be on your immediate bucket list.
Best Hacking Movies
My list of the best five hacking movies Hollywood has ever made:
1. The Matrix Series:
How can any movie on computers and hacking not have the Matrix Trilogy as a part of a ‘must-watch’ list. The movie explains that the world we live in is an illusion, a computer program that decides what we see and keeps the real world hidden from us. A small civilization of humans have managed to survive and live whilst the computers rule the Earth and are of the belief that Neo, an average hacker, is the chosen one who would take down the computer virus and restore peace once again. An academy award winning movie starring Keanu Reaves, Lawrence Fishburne, Carrie-Ann Moss and Hugo Weaving, this is my favourite and the most epic movie on computers ever made.
2. Tron (1982)
Artificial intelligence was a concept only on paper when this movie released and it is something that we are realizing only now. The movie talks about two computer programmers, Kevin and Edward, one of whom has written a successful game but gets stolen by his Edward. Edward takes credit for the game and fires Kevin from the company. In order to collect evidence, Kevin tries to hack into the computers mainframe but gets prevented by an artificial intelligence program developed by Edward. The program starts over-riding human commands and attempts at taking control of mainframes from the world over. The movie stars Jeff Bridges, David Warner, Bruce Boxleitner and Cindy Morgan. The movie has developed a cult following amongst the computer geeks and also saw a sequel in 2010 with Bridges and Boxleitner reprising their roles.
3. Live Free or Die Hard
The Die Hard series of movies have become famous for showcasing NYPD officer John McLane do the most outlandish stunts and help protect his country from all enemies. In the series’ fourth installment, the enemy is within it’s borders in the form of a hacker, Thomas Gabriel who hacks into all of the countries mainframes one-by-one and holds the entire country ransom. He eventually aims at embezzling all of the governments money and escaping for good. McClane gets in touch with ace hacker, Matt Farrell who identifies what Gabriel is trying to do and tries to stop him for good. This movie is pure paradise for hackers and computer lovers with the entire movie being based on it. A great action-entertainer that would never be boring, although the story might seem unrealistic. Starring Bruce Willis, Justin Long, Maggie Q and Timothy Olyphant.
Based on a true story of a German youth who subsequently lost his life, the movie is about two friends who start doubting everything that they see around them. They don’t believe in the news they watch, politicians, foreign policies of countries and so on. When Karl Koch starts suspecting everything around him, he befriends David who together hack into various computer data from world over to understand more about what goes on behind the scenes. When the KGB gets a drift of what Karl and David are doing, they persuade them to spy for them on the basis of contacts from drug dealers. The movie talks about how Karl’s life went from bad to worse with catastrophic results towards the end. This movie tries to highlight the adverse effects of hacking and how to draw a line on what is acceptable and what isn’t. The fact that this movie is based on a true story is even more over-whelming and puts some perspective that everything that is shown in movies is actually possible or at least some of it is. The movie stars German actors August Diehl and Fabian Busch.
5. War Games
War is not child’s play but what happens when this statement actually becomes true? During the height of the cold war, the American government decides that it’s missile solos must be automated without any human intervention. This prompts them to set up a super computer which would control all of the American nuclear missile commands. A young hacker David, is searching for some computer games and comes across a game titled Global Thermonuclear War. What David does not realize that this is not a game but a true program that controls all the missile silos of USA. When David starts playing the game he unknowingly is about to start World War III which would end up being a nuclear catastrophe. Unlike the conventional movies on hacking, this movie takes a more off-beaten path that makes it far more interesting. Most of the hacking movies are related to terrorists and AI but this movie aims at being slightly different. Starring Matthew Broderick, Dabney Coleman and John Wood.
There you have it folks, best hacking movies Hollywood has ever made according to me. Which one you like the most? Share with us via the comments.
